St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival presents
Nika & Madison
We are honoured to close this year’s festival with Nika & Madison by Eva Thomas. In it, two childhood friends are forced to test their resilience and loyalty in a fight for justice. Madison (Star Slade), a sharp University of Toronto student, and Nika (Ellyn Jade), who prefers the simplicity of life on the reservation, reunite for a weekend back home. When Nika rescues Madison from a sexual assault by a policeman, the officer is left critically injured. Fearing disbelief, the Indigenous women go on the run—first on the reserve, then into the wilderness, before being chased back to the city. As detectives investigate, the justice system’s biases blur the lines between right and wrong.
